Workshops
"Science Beyond the Lab"
Science beyond the lab is a workshop organised by Shell Global Solutions B.V. and Shell UK. Meet and hear a Senior Woman Technology Manager and Role Model in Science, Joke Driessen, talk about how scientific ideas are progressed through Shell such as biofuels and CO2 carbon capture. Then later engage in a discussion about how new technology ideas are pursued and progressed throughout the business of Shell, especially when Shell thrives on being at the forefront of innovation for 100 years.
Shell's science and technology is geared to meet the challenge of the world's growing energy demands whilst producing petrochemicals sustainably and economically. In the face of 21st century demand, we apply latest technological solutions for exploring and producing oil and gas, processing and refining products, and developing energy from new sources. Our success is built on integrating technology, driving innovation and harnessing expertise across the spectrum. To take part in this discussion, please sign up for "Science beyond the Lab".
"Mock Peer Review Panel"
EPSRC are the main UK government agency for funding research and training in engineering and the physical sciences, investing around £740 million a year in a broad range of subjects - from mathematics to materials science, and from information technology to structural engineering.
The aim of the EPSRC mock panel exercise is to train people in the process and regulations of the standard responsive mode panel. The mock panel is a simulation of a real panel using a set of research proposals, which have already gone through peer review.
"Science Communication"
Engaging the public and government in discussions about science.
This workshop will be a panel discussion, with plenty of room for questions from the floor, about the intersection of science, the media, and policy makers.
Speakers will include Nancy Mendoza from the Science Media Centre, who work to get the voices of scientists in the news media.
A representative from Sense about Science, who will respond to the misrepresentation of science on matters that concern society.
"Science Policy Explained & Explored"
Science Policy Explained & Explored is a workshop with the objective to provide an overview of the science policy process from a number of different perspectives, and to explore how active scientists can contribute their knowledge to it. In particular, we will explore practical methods which can be devised to make this process easier. A panel of individuals with different perspectives of the science policy process, including that specifically relating to women, will share their experiences, and workshop participants will be invited to contribute their views.
"Work/life Balance & Personal Development"
This workshop is organised by Springboard.
Springboard is an award winning personal and professional development programme, designed and developed by women for women. It has been created specifically to enable women to achieve their full potential both at work and in their personal lives and to gain greater influence. Women are less well represented than men in more senior roles at all levels in the University; providing Springboard programmes for women is one of the means by which we aim to address this concern.
