Mentorship
The Mentorship Scheme is intended to complement and strengthen the programmes currently offered by OxWip. Research has consistently shown that a common feature among women who advance to senior-level positions of leadership is the experience of mentorship early on in their careers. Recognizing the catalytic effect of mentorship, OxWip hopes to offer female student members the opportunity to gain valuable real world knowledge from established figures in the public, corporate, academic, and non-profit sectors. OxWip will serve as the link between willing Mentors and current Oxford undergraduate and postgraduate students.
A mutually beneficial relationship between the mentee and the mentor will be fostered through the OxWip Mentorship Scheme. While each pair of women will establish the particular contours of their Mentor-Mentee relationship, it is envisioned that Mentors will offer advice on such topics as the pros and cons of working in their sector, strategies for attaining a position of leadership, and balancing the responsibilities of work and family life. Mentors might consider including their mentee on a project during university vacations or scheduling monthly or termly lunches. This would offer mentors the chance to partake in an initiative that aims to bring more women into positions of leadership. In return for the mentor’s accessibility and willingness to serve as role models, OxWip’s academically talented, enthusiastic and ready to learn mentees might assist the mentor with research or other projects of interest.
To become involved in the mentorship scheme please send a statement of interest, including details of your qualifications to OxWip at: oxwip@herald.ox.ac.uk or Sign Up and fill in the forms.
