Leadership Development Workshops
OxWip’s Leadership Development Workshops were created to equip women with the professional skill-set and confidence they need for career advancement. Recent workshops have focused on public-speaking, debating, journalistic writing, and networking. Workshop presenters are University faculty or representatives of our sponsors, giving current students valuable professional contacts and fostering greater interaction among generations of Oxonians.
Distinguished Women Leaders Speaker Series
In response to the paucity of women speakers and lecturers at the University, OxWip launched the Distinguished Women Leaders speaker series. The invited women guests stem from elected politics, business, academia, policy, media, and non-profit organisations.
The women are invited to speak on a topic of their choice, and many chose to detail the path of their careers and speak about any challenges and obstacles they faced juggling professional and personal commitments.
Past speakers have included distinguished British Neuroscientist, Baroness Susan Greenfield, the First Independent Adjudicator for Higher Education in the UK, Dame Ruth Deech and Emma Baylis, Head of M&A Tax at KPMG.
Mentorship Scheme
Research has consistently shown that a common feature among women who advance to senior-level positions of leadership is the experience of mentorship early on in their careers. Through its Mentorship/Internship Scheme, OxWip serves as the link between willing women mentors and current Oxford undergraduate and postgraduate students. Although each pair of women establish the particular contours of their mentor-mentee relationship, mentee might work on an intensive project with their mentor during university vacations, meet with their mentor for monthly lunches, or shadow their mentor at the mentor’s workplace. Mentees gain professional experience, as well as advice on the pros and cons of working in a particular sector and strategies for career advancement.
Social Networking
Contacts are vital to professional success. OxWip’s social events are designed to strength ties among student, faculty, and alumni members. Social networking events are held at a variety of locations around the city. Past events include the Freshers Chocolate party, LUSHious Valentine and the annual garden party.
Conferences
OxWip holds regular conferences, giving students the chance to participate in workshops, listen to a range of speakers, observe panel debates and network with professionals. Past conferences include Women in Science and Women as Leaders.
