OxWip spotlights women’s opinions in election event
15 April 2005 — Oxford Women in politics (OxWip) is giving the next generation of female politicians a voice. On Tuesday 3 May, student leaders have been invited to a panel discussion where students, members of the community and the media will have an opportunity engage them in debate over issues in the upcoming General Election. The event will be hosted at Mansfield College (8 p.m.) and will be moderated by Dr. Frances Lannon, the Principal of Lady Margaret Hall.
The Oxford political scene has a reputation as a very male-dominated place, though OxWip is making inroads in this respect. This is the first event of its kind that draws together speakers from across the University, including the Oxford University Student Union (OUSU), the Oxford Union, the Labour Club, the Conservative Association and the Oxford University Liberal Democrats.
OxWip serves as a watchdog, highlighting the problem of gender disparity in the academic and professional sectors of the political world. The organisation works actively to raise awareness of the persistence of gender imbalances locally, nationally and globally. Incidentally, the world-famous Oxford Union’s flagship debate on the general election held earlier this week featured an all-male panel.
